Flat Black Coffee Companyi just found a new cafe right around the corner from where i work … i am SO excited!

Flat Black Coffee Company featured a pleasant atmosphere, a Mac user in the corner suggested a wireless set-up for those that need to surf or work on premises, some funky + casual Bostonians floating in + out { getting the necessary caffeination to get through the day } … pretty refreshing to just have the good old ’small, medium, large’ approach …

i asked the man behind the machine what a ‘flat black white latte’ was … and he explained this is the way Australians order a latte … the Aussie terminology … so, quick shift + i completely understood the chalkboard menu …

overall … i’m psyched to know that i have an alternative to Starbucks … i got a large vanilla non-fat latte to go … had to get back to the grind ‘n’ all … stop by if you can … enjoy …

Northwest Coffee

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Last weekend a friend and I made the 3-hour drive down to Portland, Oregon to catch Interpol last Friday night.  Portland is always a cool place to visit – cooler than cool.  The center is comprised of smaller-than-standard city blocks that make getting around really easy.

 It was a rainy, chilly weekend in Portland, but we made the best of it.  My friend remembered a neat-looking cafe that we had walked by before on previous visits, but had never tried out.  So we made it a point to go there this weekend.

 The place is called Northwest Coffee (how is that for a generic name?) and is located on Burnside, about a 10-minute walk from Powell’s books.  It’s a very old place, with fairly large gaps in the very unfinished, very original wooden floor.  But the place oozes very subtle cafe-cozy charm for sure.  On a cold rainy day, I don’t think we could have picked a better place to duck into for a latte.

Along with the charm of the original floor, exposed brick and support beams, they do a mean cup of joe there as well.  The two guys behind the bar were pretty intense.  We took our lattes and sweets (see picture below) to the antique sofa at the end of the cafe and enjoyed the patter of the rain and soaked in the place.  Man, the lattes there were pretty perfect….good incorporation of coffee/milk…good stamina…good temperature.  I wish I were there now.

They were playing some cool tunes as well.  On our way out, we checked in with the dudes running the place to ask the name of the band that they were playing.  The answer?  “Java”.  Go figure.

{ White Chocolate Mocha }

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

over the weekend i got myself a triple venti white chocolate mocha from the Starbucks in Needham … very nice, very nice … liquid candy … i have been removed from the sweeter side of hot beverages as of late, trying to simultaneously cut down on the caffeine & the sugar | cream intake … this weekend i made the exception, for the sake of this blog really { i’ll find an excuse for anything, eh? }, & i think it was a nice change of pace …

strange, but when you get something like a white chocolate mocha, you don’t concentrate as much on the strength of the coffee … more on the esophagal closure surrounding the syrupy goodness as the drink goes down … the extra shot helped a bit … & unfortunately i think i would need to add in more espresso to even get to the amount of coffee taste i prefer { seems even Starbucks has smoothed out their flavour, leveled it down to approximate & anticipate the Dunkin’ Donuts driven preferences of most of New England } … more $ for the ‘bucks i guess …

{ Dark Magic }

Go get yourself a mug ... aight?aight … i was drastically disappointed with French Vanilla this morning, right? :: then Dannette here at work recommends i try Dark Magic … my God! much, much better … 6 ounce setting, one half & half, one sugar … i am zinging with frenetic happy energy … a bit much for my system right now as i am ramping back up to drinking at least a cup a day { still trying to keep ‘the weight’ dowN simultaneously though, eh? } … if you can, enjoy a cup of Dark Magic for yourself … real good … honest …
